World Hearing Day is held on 3 March every year to focus attention on the importance of ear health and developing awareness of the factors that contribute to positive listening experiences.
This year's theme is 'Changing mindsets: Empower yourself. Make ear and hearing care a reality for all!'
For deaf and hard of hearing children and young people, World Hearing Day focuses on empowering them to self-advocate for their auditory needs and to understand the ways in which they can maximise the use of their residual hearing through the use of assistive technology.
By encouraging deaf and hard of hearing students to recognize the importance of caring for their individual hearing needs, opportunities are provided to drive change. Changing mindsets about hearing loss leads to empowerment and self-determination for deaf students so that they are more able to fully participate academically and socially with their peers within their schools and communities.
