Today we celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a United Nations (UN) day instigated in 1992 that promotes community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
The IDPwD theme for 2024, 'Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future' reinforces that leaders with disability make the world a fairer place for everyone. The day is also a reminder of the importance to be inclusive in everything we do and remove the barriers that have traditionally prevented people with disability to achieve leadership goals.
For the approximately 7,000 deaf and hard of hearing children and young people in Victoria under 26 years of age, this day is also a time to reflect on the ways in which we practice inclusion in educational settings.
We strive to ensure that all deaf and hard of hearing students in Victorian schools have full access to a high-quality education that is welcoming and inclusive and provides rich opportunities to develop, learn and socialise with their peers.
