Today the Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) acknowledges World Hearing Day as part of Hearing Awareness Week. World Hearing Day is held on 3 March each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world. The World Hearing Day theme for 2022 is “To hear for life, listen with care” with a focus on the importance of safe listening as a means of maintaining good hearing throughout life.
Many common causes of hearing loss can be prevented, including hearing loss caused by exposure to loud sounds. The World Health Organisation (WHO) launched in 2021 the World Report on hearing which highlighted the increasing number of people living with and at risk of hearing loss. The WHO emphasised noise control as one of the seven key H.E.A.R.I.N.G. interventions and stressed the importance of lessening exposure to loud sounds.
