In May 2011, the Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) called for expressions of interest to undertake innovative resource development projects that would lead to knowledge-sharing across the deaf education workforce and/or the development of teaching and learning resources for students with a hearing loss.
The Resource Development projects enabled deaf education practitioners and experts, in collaboration with VDEI to:
- pilot and implement projects that strengthen the sector's capacity to deliver accessible and high quality assessment and learning programs for students who are deaf and hard of hearing
- share knowledge and expertise through the development of professional learning sessions, workshops, resource material, or a state-wide professional learning conference
- enable sustainable knowledge-sharing through website design ideas.
Priority was given to projects that would have an impact at a system level through building the capacity of the workforce and/or the development of sustainable resources to:
- purchase and trial new resources
- purchase casual relief teaching days so that key staff could be released to develop resources or professional learning materials
- contract expertise to trial, pilot or develop particular resources or training materials
- work in partnership to implement state-wide professional meetings or conferences.
One of the major innovations that arose from the VDEI resource development project was the establishment of a captioning centre in regional Victoria. The Auslan Reader is a resource for families and schools. 20 PM Nelson readers from Levels 1-5 have been translated into Auslan using Deaf language models.

Mount View Deaf Facility
The development of a DVD to use with students and teachers to highlight the difficulties in communicating to students who are deaf or have a hearing impairment
St. Mary’s College for Hearing Impaired Students (Wantirna)
A pilot program which seeks to improve student outcomes by appropriate goal setting and specifically measuring student achievements

To build an understanding of deafness, mental health issues and the link between interpersonal development and personal learning

The production of a DVD, to increase the understanding of the implications of a hearing loss and promote inclusive classroom practices
