On 13 April each year, the Australian Deaf Community observes Auslan Day.
This day celebrates the Community's rich history, culture and language by honouring the date of the first publication of the Auslan dictionary in 1989. The publication of the dictionary by Professor Trevor Johnston gave the Australian Deaf Community a name for their language and a linguistic framework that described its visual-gestural grammar and lexicon.
In 1991, Auslan was recognised as a community language in Australia. VDEI acknowledges the significance of Auslan Day and pays respect to the vital role Auslan plays in the lives of deaf people in Australia.
